Colchester Royal Grammar School

Colchester Royal Grammar School has a history of scholarship dating back to the sixteenth century; it was founded in 1206 and granted two Royal Charters, by Henry VIII in 1539 and by Elizabeth I in 1584. CRGS was described by The Telegraph as the ‘top-performing state school’, having appeared at the top of their league table on many occasions. The school has won multiple awards, including several from the ‘Good Schools Guide’, which acclaims the school as “one of the country’s top selective boys’ state schools; rivals many independents.” CRGS aims to provide a humane and caring environment which develops the character, personality, individuality and awareness of each student. Free independent thought and accordance with the best of human values underpin the students’ approach to life.

Description

Geographic Location

The boarders are within walking distance of the town of Colchester, which includes a cinema, leisure centre and plenty of restaurants and cafes. Boarders are also only a short train journey to London, and with parental consent can enjoy a day in the capital city.

School Facilities

The school has outstanding music and drama facilities and a comprehensive sports fixture list, as well as a its own heated outdoor swimming pool, fully-equipped gymnasium, multigym, extensive games fields and a beautiful library, grand piano and smart board technology which boarders are welcome to use.

Academic Results

2019 saw the school achieve its highest ever percentage of A* grades, with 20 students achieving 4 A* grades or more. Students have gone on to study at the best universities around the world, including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Imperial, as well as top universities in Canada and Hong Kong. The year also saw a 100% A-Level pass rate. The school holds a specialist accreditation for science.

Extra-curricular Activities 

A wide range of trips, exchanges and extracurricular activities are offered to enrich the students’ education. Exciting clubs and societies on offer include public speaking club, Physics Olympiad, Geo Society, table tennis, chess club, Medsoc, engineering, and history, philosophy and classics societies.
