Bur Oak Secondary School

Bur Oak Secondary School opened in September 2007 with only two grades (9 & 10). Bur Oak held its ‘official’ opening ceremony on May 1, 2008 followed by an open house. The school now boasts a student population of upwards of 1,500 students in all four grades. 

Bur Oak Secondary School is committed to supporting student achievement and well-being through various engaging opportunities that meet individual student learning needs. BOSS is an active and exciting learning environment where students are able to choose to participate in various clubs, committees, and athletic teams to ensure their secondary school experience is both enjoyable and memorable. The dedicated staff at BOSS also continue to ensure that students receive the academic support that they need by implementing effective and engaging instructional strategies, using clear and achievable assessment and evaluation practices, and providing extra support and guidance when needed.

Bur Oak Secondary School is a public secondary school in Markham, Ontario, Canada established in 2007, and is part of the York Region District School Board. The school was named after the road which it is built on, which in turn is named for the city of Markham’s official tree, the Bur oak.

Bur Oak Secondary School is one of the most prestigious quality teaching famous secondary schools. They are noted for its strong academic performance. According to the 2015 ranking of Ontario secondary schools, Bur Oak ranks 10th out of 676 schools in the province. The school offers a unique four-year core French program with intensive focus is placed on global French culture, music and history, in addition to grammar and structure.

The school also offers a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program. As of the 2015-2016 school year, the program is offered in five specializations:

Extra-curricular Activities 

Bur Oak Secondary School boasts a variety of student-led organizations and clubs and holds several student events throughout the year. Notably, it holds an annual back-to-school barbeque, Bossilicious in September, and a Summer Carnival in late May. In addition, the school also hosts dances, movie nights, and coffeehouses that are organized by Student Activity Council, satellite councils, academic departments, or student clubs.

At Bur Oak, everyone is encouraged to get involved in a variety of activities to enrich their high school experience. Some of the opportunities available to students include Anime Club, Computer Programming Club, Debate Club, Drama Club, Improv Team, K-Pop Club, Muslim Student Association, Newcomers Network, and Science Club, to name just a few. Extra-curricular sports provide students with the opportunity to compete at a very high and intense level of competition with other secondary schools within the Region.
