Nelson College for Girls

Established in 1883, Nelson College for Girls is an all-girls state school with a private Preparatory School, and close ties to the all-boys Nelson College. The school is proud of its history; for more than 130 years, it has produced young women who have embarked on the world with confidence and a sense of pride in achieving to the best of their abilities, often to outstanding effect, both in New Zealand and beyond.


Geographic Location

With a population of 80,000, Nelson is considered “sunshine capital” of New Zealand, close to beaches, rivers, mountains, and the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks. The school is a short distance from the modern city facilities of Nelson centre, and near to international airports in Wellington (25 minutes), Christchurch (45 minutes) and Auckland (80 minutes).

On the parklike campus, students have access to excellent facilities including a renovated library, drama and music suites, health and fitness suites and a Modern Learning Environment with integrated digital technology.

Academic Results

Nelson College for Girls is proud of its NCEA results each year, in which students consistently score above the national average on all measures. In 2013, over 30% of Year 11 students gained a Level 1 Certificate endorsed with Excellence, while a total of 25 Nelson girls were awarded Scholarships. 

Extra-curricular Activities 

The school boasts an extremely strong Music and Drama extra curricular programme; in 2013 the Stella Nova choir won the Regional Big Sing choral competition; and students also perform strongly in the Sheila Winn Shakespeare competition. Other extracurricular activities are also available.
